The NFT marketplace has created a modern-day renaissance allowing artists to push the boundaries of art. It makes sense as art has evolved beyond frescoes, canvas, and even pencil on paper. Art and the mediums we use to create have started to reflect the power of technology available to artists.
With technology by our side, we are no longer held back by flat 2D art, murals on a wall, or even animation on a streaming platform. Artists love to push creativity further and further past what we are used to; that is their job, and the multitude of 10,000 derivative collections are proving it every day. Now, a team with a coder, an artist, and a smooth social media manager are creating large collections with gamified tokens, derivatives, variations, iterations, and utilities. continue reading: NFT Hours Website. In the process of creating these Skulls, I have been scouring the internet for reference images and whenever possible: catching on the movies that sparked the inspiration for a particular Skully.
Today I watched Cheech and Chong's Up In Smoke. whew! I remember the first time I watched it, many many years ago and in a different state of mind, but you cannot deny the brilliant comedy and Stoner Lifestyle of the movie. Dang! Which gives me another idea for a completely different collection: Non Fungible Tokers. I am sure someone has tought of it and it's only a matter of time before the collection is public somewhere. I won't hate on it if and when it is public as long as its stlyish. Anyways, back to the movies that we all love, the characters and storylines that at one time amazed us and now we go back for more because nostalgia's sake. Other movies I have watched recently because of the Skullys: The Godfather (Brando), Apocalypse Now (Brando Again!), American Me (Olmos) and Blood In/Blood Out (Paco- Benjamin Pratt). It is great to spend time rewatching these movie classics and drawing the Skully version of my favorite characters. These movies inspire time after time. -DTM What started out as a cool idea to draw some skulls, soon became a bigger mission. Now the Skully Series is here and a plan is in motion to bring you some amazing art by amazing artists. Yes. Artists. Plural.I have recruited a few artists to bring in their flavor to the Skullys. I can't wait to show you all that is coming to the Skully Series. The First drop is scheduled for late September and we will have a total of three drops to include all 144 Skullys! -DTM
I started drawing skulls as a young child, as a Chicano growing up in East LA, Skulls are part of our culture.
The Day of the Dead is a real tradition. I remember visiting the cemetery and bringing gifts, flowers, food, drink and spending all day with other families visiting their departed ancestors. Skulls spark my imagination in ways that transcend art mediums, culture, popular media and religion. I am just starting to comprehend how deep my roots go in the way of the Skulls and what it means to humanity. I want to share my experience with you as I continue to explore the Skullys in art, in this series I call: Skullys. -DTM |
